Danny came to Australia from Malaysia as a teenager in 1963. I met him in 2019, when I painted a mural of him and his dog, Smarty. Ever since, we’ve remained good friends. From time to time we go out for lunch, and he’ll take me to some secret spot he knows in Campsie, Burwood or the city. We sit, eat, and talk about life, politics, or whatever old war stories he has from the past.

Every Sydneysider knows Danny as the eccentric old Asian guy dancing around with his signs. They’ve seen him at their station on the way to school, in the city on their lunch break, at Olympic Park before a concert, at a protest, or dancing around on King Street on the weekend, stopping for selfies. He has become part of the fabric of our city and our daily lives.

I once told him how many smiles he gives to the city. He responded, “It keeps me alive.”

I wanted to portray the other side of Danny: the Danny I know in those quiet moments, the Danny behind the signs.
